Free Range Talk opinion writer Deborah L Born is pairing two extremely different Senators to underline our present habit of taking hostages by dogma. ________ "Today the New York Times brings us two tales of two Senators under siege, one Democrat, and one Republican. Senator Diane Feinstein, (CA – D), is under fire for her continued support of the duplicitous NSA. Senator Marco Rubio, (FL – R), is under fire for his belief in an immigration overhaul. Senator Rubio has displeased the rankest of the rank and file in his Party of No by saying that Latinos and others who are here illegally should have a rock-strewn path to citizenship. I think the ones who are displeased are mostly of the extremely racist variety so vocal at this time, but the squeaky wheel thing is winning the day in that dying Party of NO-thing. The movers and shakers, as well as the money men are focused on 2016, and rightly or not, see him as the best hope for the revival of the brand. Barring a teetotal disaster on the part of the Democrats, it ain’t gonna happen but, hope springs eternal. ... This unwillingness to compromise and hold a discussion is typically Puritan and given the fact that a proportion of this country comes from Puritan stock, should surprise no one. On the other hand, the Democrats have Family Feud down to a science, and can brook any numbers of disagreements without busting up the party. And, the lady has points, insufficient points, in my opinion, but she has reasons for them. She has always been a maverick of sorts, liberal without being truly progressive, one reason she has weathered the political storms in California. She is worth listening to, if only because she studies the issues and knows whereof she speaks. But, more, she really cares about the country and its people. The Democratic Party needs people like her, tough, no nonsense, wrong at times, but never boring. We make room for her kind of presence, something that ensures our survival and viability as a political party. The Republicans need to take a lesson from us and stop holding their sons and daughters hostage to dogma. Of course they won’t, which is why they will cease to matter in the long term."
