The first, and up until now, the only, reference book on Hobo Nickels, written fifteen years ago by Del Romines, has been out of print for about 10 of those 15 years. With the resurgence in popularity of these truly unique collectibles, hobo carving enthusiasts have had to rely upon sporadic articles in the numismatic press and material emanating from the Original Hobo Nickel Society (OHNS) and its publication “BO TALES” for coverage of their favorite area of collecting. Until now. This new book, with its larger format, updated historic coverage and expanded illustrations is a superb effort in providing specific and valuable information on the subject. A great many new observations, garnered from the examination of hundreds of carved pieces previously unreported, has enlightened all of us on new techniques and possible carvers. The term “exhaustive research” is often overused, but not in this case. Notes were taken on virtually every coin examined, and with the advent of the authentication/certification service offered by the OHNS, it provided the opportunity to observe many more pieces from various sources. The format of this book is somewhat different from the last, but it is comprehensive and easily followed. The terminology used in the book is also nicely covered throughout the text. It should stimulate even more interest and excitement in an area of numismatics that has already seen a phenomenal growth over the last three years. The stories these creations could tell would be fascinating, to say the least, as each one is unique and the result of many artists fond memories. This book is the culmination of years of research, and it certainly shows. I know you will enjoy reading it as much as the author did making it become a reality.
