The elephant has scars covering his body, a severely injured eye that was likely caused by a beating and a hole in his ear that was caused by an ankus, an iron rod with a hook at the end. Forced into street begging for he temple, Sunder is chained in a filthy shack when not being used. In 2012, the Maharashtra Forest Department and Project Elephant gave orders to retire Sunder to a sanctuary. Instead, Maharashtra Member of Legislative Assembly, Vinay Kore -- who had given the elephant as a gift to the temple -- sent Sunder to be chained in an old, dark poultry shed in Warananagar, where this elephant is still currently (2014) kept. Upon inspection by two independent elephant experts -- authorized by the Animal Welfare Board of India who examined Sunder on Dec 20, 2013 -- it was found that Sunder is dehydrated and underweight. His body is heavily scarred and there is a hole in his ear through which his mahout controls him with a bull hook. The Ministry of Environment and Forest ordered Sunders relocation over a year ago [2012], until the order for him to be moved to a sanctuary had lapsed. The petition to relocate Sunder had been presented to the Bombay High Court, which ordered the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), to comply with the ministerial order previously passed. The PCCF was to submit a report to the court by December 23, 2013. The High Court hearing on Dec. 23, 2013 was adjourned until January 21, 2014. #FreeSunder
