French Open Day 3 Recap - Starting on the mens side, we had some big upsets that continued from Day 2. No. 11 Grigor Dimitrov, No. 16 Tommy Haas, and No. 21 Nicolas Almagro were all upset on Day 3. Ivo Karlovic was just way too much for the still up and coming Dimitrov. Haas and Almagro both retired from their matches in the first set. Haas was the most surprising as he was up 5-2 in the first set but the shoulder just could not hold up. Almagro was down 0-5 in the first set when he retired due to an ankle injury. The newly Athletic DNA sponsored Lleyton Hewitt fell in four sets to Carlos Berlocq. Hopefully Hewitt can make one more run this year deep into a major. For the French, they saw two of their top players advance to the next round. Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet both won. A little bit of bad news came out of the Gasquet camp after the match. Gasquet stated that he didnt know how long is lingering back issue would hold up but he would play until it gave out. For the US men, they went 1-1. Jack Sock was the beneficiary of the Almagro retirement and will look to move on in round two. Steve Johnson, the former USC Trojan, has fought back from 2 sets down and a match point to take a fifth set lead 3-1 before the match was postponed due to darkness. Johnson will look to finish off the match and move into the second round tomorrow. The ladies side of the draw saw the biggest upset so far as No. 2 Na Li lost in three sets to Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic. The fans were about 50/50 on cheering in this match. Another upset was the No. 13 Caroline Wozniacki who lost to Yanina Wickmayer. In Wozniackis press conference, she said she did not want to talk about her personal life but did say that it had been tough. Not sure she was able to get over that in time to really concentrate on this tournament. She also mentioned that she had a nagging knee issue as well. Hopefully the time off will do her well and she can play with a clear head and heart at Wimbledon. The US women went 3-2 on the day. No. 15 Sloane Stephens, Coco Vandeweghe, and Alison Riske all moved onto the next round. Madison Keys was not able to out play the clay court specialist Sara Errani losing in three sets. However, Keys showed a lot of heart in this match. She was down 1-5 in the first before reeling off four games in a row to make it 5-5. Errani would go on to win the set 7-5. In the second set, Keys started to really push Errani around the court with her power and took it 6-3. Unfortunately for Keys, she just ran out of steam after the second set and lost 6-1 in the third. Looking at the Day 4 action - Chatrier will have Venus Williams, Novak Djokovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Maria Sharapova. Lenglen will have Gilles Simon, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Alize Cornet(FRA) vs. Taylor Townsend(USA). Radwanska will be out on Court 1 while Lepchenko vs. Kerber and Stosur will be out on Court 2. The young Canadian Eugenie Bouchard will be the first match out on Court 7.
