French Quarter Citizens Posted by Carol Gniady · about an hour ago HABANA - RED ALERT ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1:30 P.M. HABANA CAFE We urge you to attend the Vieux Carré Commission Architectural Committee Meeting, Tuesday, September 23, 1:30 p.m. On the agenda is a review of the proposed “Cafe Habana” establishment at the corner of Esplanade and N. Rampart Street (1036 and 1040 Esplanade). While French Quarter Citizens, Inc. is supportive of a smaller restaurant venue at this location we are OPPOSED to this proposed development in its current state and the impact it would have on the neighborhood, particularly for this historic boulevard and the residents who live here. STRs on Angela Hills WWL Radio Show Also, Tuesday, September 23 at 3 p.m., tune in to radio station WWL at AM 870 or FM 103.5, or online at WWL.COM and call in (504) 260-1870 for Angela Hill’s talk show on Short Term Rentals with guests Meg Lousteau, Executive Director, VCPORA and Polly Hardie. The discussion will explore the issues facing residents living amongst illegal short term rentals including lack of enforcement of current laws and proposed zoning changes to allow proliferation of STRs throughout the city. Besides her work with VCPORA Meg is also a member of the Short Term Rentals Committee, co-chaired by Brian Furness, past president of FQC and Jay Seastrunk, treasurer of the Upper Hurstville Residents Association and Security District. 111 Iberville Open House Wednesday, September 24, 5 - 6 p.m., you are invited to stop by an open house at 111 Iberville Street, the proposed site of a “small, 79-room boutique hotel” in exploration for re-development of this historic structure by Badine Land Limited. You may recall this was tried before. In 2004, parking lots were re-zoned to a newly-created zoning category called VCS-1, which lists hotels as conditional uses under strict criteria. As French Quarter Citizens, it is in our best interest to keep a close eye on this proposal as this “open house” is an announcement to resurrect the hotel redevelopment for this property. Please attend the open house if you are able and join FQC in sharing concerns for the increased density and impact this would have on the neighborhood. Draft CZO City Zoning Ordinance (CZO) Update. Many thanks to our dedicated board members who attended and participated at the three City Planning Commission draft CZO public input meetings held this month. You may still catch these meetings airing on Cox Cable public access Channel 6. What was evident from the public participation is that the draft CZO has many flaws and many people and organizations, including FQC, were not happy with the speed in which the final review was conducted, and, most importantly, that requested changes to many sections were ignored by CPC staff. The final draft CZO was sent to the members of the City Council, and they are continuing a public comment period, requesting submissions received by next Tuesday, September 30, and going into October. FQC will issue a position paper including the essential areas of the CZO plan that require revisiting. We will continue communicating with you by email with specifics regarding our objections. Written comment may be submitted by completing the online comment form on the Councils website. The mission of French Quarter Citizens, Inc. is to preserve the quality of life in the Vieux Carré neighborhood, its historical character and architecture, and to focus attention on the problems confronting our neighborhood and contribute to their resolution; and to work with other organizations in achieving these goals.
