French official statements (Paris, July 7 2014 ) - Human rights – Opening of “Labcitoyen 2014” by Laurent Fabius (July 8, 2014) Mr. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will open the third edition of “Labcitoyen” on July 8 at the Maison des cultures du mondes (World Cultures Institute). Approximately 100 young francophones from the five continents who are committed to human rights have been invited to participate in this forum which is being organized in Paris by the Institut français. Mr. Laurent Fabius will reaffirm the key role that young people can play in defending human rights and in particular in the debates on the abolition of the death penalty. On this occasion, he will reaffirm our commitment to the universal abolition of the death penalty. As in previous years, the “Labcitoyen” forum will allow participants to address the diversity of human rights struggles through conferences, debates, visits and meetings with associations and personalities involved in the defense and promotion of human rights. - Ukraine Some media sources have interpreted the comments made by the ambassador of France to Russia in his interview with the Interfax news agency as recognition of the annexation of Crimea by Russia and a return to cooperation with the country in the G8 format. Can Mr. Jean-Maurice Ripert’s statement be considered to be France’s official position? During an interview published on July 2 by a news agency, the ambassador of France to Russia reaffirmed France’s constant position in support of respect for the international legitimacy and sovereignty of Ukraine. When and where might a meeting between Ukraine and Russia, within the framework of the contact group and with the support of the OSCE, take place? The German chancellor supports participation in this dialogue, as does former presidential chief of staff Viktor Medvedchuk. Does France share this view? Will you participate in these consultations with the representatives of the separatists? France supports the process initiated following President Hollande’s meeting with Chancellor Merkel, President Putin and President Poroshenko in Bénouville on June 6. The trilateral discussions involving Ukraine, Russia and the OSCE must continue in order to find a peaceful solution to the crisis, based on the peace plan proposed by President Poroshenko and the joint statement adopted on July 2 in Berlin by Mr. Laurent Fabius and his German, Ukrainian and Russian counterparts. As the minister of foreign affairs and international development indicated yesterday, the most pressing need is the establishment of a ceasefire.
