Freo Workers Club: Dear Members This weekend we have more fantastic live music for you and I hope that I will see you at the Club on both Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. On Friday evening March 28th , three-piece acoustic group DRAM will entertain us once again. You can find out more about them and view photos on the Events page of the Club’s website: freoworkers.net/events.html. Many of you enjoyed DRAM on Valentine’s Day when they played before The BordererS. You can enjoy a meal from the Billy Clare Club Cafe and you might win the Members’ jackpot which is now worth a whopping $1700. You must be here and financial when it is drawn – sometime between 5.30 and 7.30pm. On Sunday March 30th we have another popular band Bad Hearts playing at the Club from 1.30-5pm. There will be a Rockabilly Class from 12.30-1.15pm costing only $10. Last Sunday’s class was a great success and meant we had dancers on the floor from the moment the band started playing. I attach ‘What’s on in April’ telling you more about what is on at the Club next month. Im delighted that the fabulous Rory McLeod from the UK is returning to the Club after his very successful concert on February 1st last year. Were privileged that Rory’s only performance in the metro area will be at our Club on Wednesday April 23rd at 7.30pm. He fits so well with the Workers Club as he once said I want my songs to keep memory alive; I suppose Im trying to tell history from working people’s point of view I am blown away by his energy, his unique style of singing, the depth and meaning in his songs and stories and the fact that he can sing, dance and play more than one instrument at the same time. His unique performance style includes tap shoes, harmonica, guitar, trombone , spoons and finger symbols and he sings a cappella as well. Others, better qualified than me, have described Rorys performances as follows: • Rory McLeod must be the musical equivalent of a six or seven ball juggler... (The Guardian UK) • • McLeod is one of the most energetic, most generous performers Ive seen. (Doug Spencer, ABC Radio) • • This man makes socio-political stance a joyous right instead of a tiresome ballad. A body of work thats fresh and full of life, laughter and song. (XPress, Perth) • • Rory is a dynamic live performer - never still or silent, his shows radiate energy. All this dynamism does not obliterate his songs which are always thought-provoking and well crafted. Get hold of one of his albums and come and see one of the folk circuits greatest live performers. (Venue magazine, Bristol UK) • • Rory McLeod has a profound disadvantage - for pigeon-holers and hacks - that he is so original its nigh impossible to compare him with anyone else. Writing songs packed with streams of words, often so dense that the casual listener could easily let the craft, beauty and power of the content slip by. An awe inspiring live performer who, you discover when you repay his craft with the scrutiny it deserves, writes quite brilliant songs. (Folk Roots UK) Make sure you buy your tickets for Rorys concert soon as they are cheaper in advance and you dont want to miss out. Tickets can be purchased from the Workers Club, Bodkins Bootery or from Ticketbooth: events.ticketbooth.au/event/RoryMcLeod. They are only $20 in advance for members (from the Club or Bodkins) $25 in advance for guests and $30 on the door if still available. If youre a member and it will be difficult for you to get to Fremantle before the concert, to buy your ticket in advance, send me an email:freoworkers@bigpond. The Billy Clare Club Cafe will be open from 5.30pm so let us know if you want to book a table and make a night of it.
