Frequently Asked Questions for Student Drivers 1) What do I do once I apply? Once you submit an application to work for Swift Transportation, you should receive an e-mail telling you what to do next. A recruiter may contact you first, but you can also call us. We will go over your application and let you know if theres anything else you need to do to complete the application process. Once the application is completed and we determine that you qualify for a position, we will schedule for a training date. 2) How do I get to the academy? If you live within 50 miles of the academy, you will be responsible for getting yourself to the training. If you are further than 50 miles, Swift will provide a Greyhound bus for you. If you prefer to drive, they will reimburse you for your gas so make sure you save your gas receipts. Your recruiter will determine your eligibility and ask if youd like to drive or if you need a bus ticket to get to the academy. 3) Where will I stay during the training? The hotel will be provided for you during the training. Your recruiter can give you more specific information regarding the hotel you will stay in during the training. 4) What do I need to bring to my training? Your recruiter will send you an e-mail with specific information on your training. It will include the address for the terminal and hotel as well as information on what to pack. All trainees need to have their Drivers License, Social Security card (not laminated), and a certified copy of their birth certificate plus any additional information listed in the e-mail. Each trainee is also responsible for their own food, so plan accordingly. Usually, $150-$200 is enough for food during training. 5) What happens during training? Depending on where you live, you will go to either a 2 or 3 week training. For the two week training, you will need your Class A Permit and a DOT medical card before you start. The first week of training will be in the classroom, and the second week will be on the road. Then, you will go back to your home state/area, where you will drive with a Swift Trainer for one week before getting your Class A License (CDL). After training, you will go to an orientation and then go out with a mentor. For the three week training, you will not need a Class A Permit or DOT medical card, but you will need to pay a $150 seating fee, which covers basic testing fees. You will spend three weeks at the academy (in class and on the driving course) before getting your Class A License (CDL). After training, you will go to an orientation and then go out with a mentor. Your recruiter will tell you whether you will go to a two or three week training. 6) When do I go to an orientation? Typically, you will go home after your training, and then go to the nearest orientation the following week. You will learn more about Swift Policies and get insurance information at the orientation. 7) What do I do with the mentor, and how long will I go with them? After your orientation, you will go out with a mentor to gain more experience. A new student goes out with a mentor for a full six weeks before getting their own truck. During that time, you will get first hand experience in the trucking industry. While with the mentor, students are paid $450 for each of the first four weeks and $500 for each of the last two weeks (total of $2800). 8) Do I get a break between my orientation and going out with the mentor? Do I come home at all during my time with the mentor? In general, Swift tells students to plan on leaving straight from the orientation with a mentor. There are times when a student may go home for a few days if a mentor isnt available immediately; transportation to and from the students home will be provided by Swift. If your mentor happens to be from your area, then you can go home when, and if, they do. Otherwise, plan on being gone for the full six weeks. If your mentor needs to go home and theyre not from your area, they will put you up in a hotel for the night. 9) Will I drive all over the country? Swift has seven comfort zones designed to keep you as close to home as possible. See the map below. You are able to choose from any comfort zone in which you live.
