Freshman On Top At NHSFR ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – Freshman Madison Haun was as nervous as anyone competing in the first performance of the 65th annual National High School Finals Rodeo on Sunday night at the Sweetwater Events Complex. Despite shaking in her boots, the Wyoming cowgirl was spot on with her rope to take the early lead in breakaway roping. The Torrington, Wyo., cowgirl competes with the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association, where she was the fourth-place finisher in breakaway roping in her first year of high school rodeo competition. The three-time National Junior High Finals Rodeo qualifier finished 18th in breakaway last year in Gallup, N.M., and was roping in the same performance Sunday as 2012 NJHFR Girls Breakaway Roping Champion Timber Allenbrand of Kansas. But it was Madison who saw her name on top this time around. “I was just really nervous,” she said. “I couldn’t see many people’s calves, so I didn’t know what was going on. I just want to get three smooth runs this week.” Out fifth in the first event of the night in the timed-event arena, Madison stopped the clock at 3.11 seconds and was the first cowgirl to record a breakaway time. She helped steer the breakaway ropers back on track as six cowgirls followed with runs in the three-second range. Three years of traveling to the NJHFR certainly helped prepare the cowgirl for her first trip to the World’s Largest Rodeo. “It’s not as much of a jump to come here after going to the junior high finals,” she said. “But I’m just taking it one run at a time.”
