Friday 31st January. We have had a very hectic week. On Monday Nicks trache was taken out as he had managed so well with the cuff down. He has been so much better without it, more relaxed and bright and a little more aware of things - more movement, eye tracking, responding to loud noises. We can also hear his voice now when he coughs or grunts. Nick was transferred to the Rehab hospital yesterday morning. All very sudden and a bit of a shock for us. On Wednesday morning we were told there might be a bed for him and asked if we would like to visit the facility. On Thursday morning the hospital rang to say they were transferring him at 10.30 am. The facility is really good and their understanding of TBI and Nicks needs is fantastic. They have assured us that Nick will be given the time and every opportunity to make as full as recovery as possible. He has 1 Doctor, 1 physio, 1 OT, 1 Speechie, 1 neuropsychologist, 1 dietician and a dedicated consistent team of nurses - instead of a revolving door of so many of the above that we gave up trying to remember their names. He seemed to manage the transfer quite well. I was allowed to go with him in the ambulance, not sure whether this was more reassuring for him or for me. He has settled in quite well although today saw another temperature spike and suspected recurrence of a chest infection so more antibiotics and another ambulance ride (me along for the ride again) for a chest x-ray at the hospital. I am just hoping that it is stress from the transfer and unfamiliar surroundings. Again he seemed to cope quite well and enjoyed a good sleep when we got back. Over the next week a program will be developed for Nick and we will meet with all his team to set goals etc. At last there will be a list/schedule to follow (for those of you who know me well, you know how much I LOVE ticking things off a list).
