Friday AM Update... *** Tricks and Treats, High Winds, Freezing Temps, Snow Showers *** Welcome to Halloween 2014. Mother nature has a few tricks up her sleeve this year in the form of winter type weather in the middle of the fall season. A very strong upper level shortwave will be diving south today through Indiana into Georgia later tonight. This is going to bring a dramatic change to our weather in the form of high winds, subfreezing temps and snow showers/flurries. Here is how it should all play out: Halloween Day/Night - we should still have some pretty good weather today in the form of partly to mostly cloudy skies with just a slight chance of a brief shower this evening. Temps should reach the low 60s and the winds shouldnt be all that strong until later on this evening. The colder air will start to work its way in by late afternoon/evening. By 5pm temps should be into the upper 50s with winds of 10-20mph (starting to pick up). By 8pm we should be down into the upper 40s with winds of 10-20mph. By 11pm we should be down into the upper 30s and the winds starting to gust to 25+mph. Im expecting temps to bottom out in the upper 20s to near 30 by morning. Regarding snow chances I think we have a good shot at seeing flakes fly in the air during the Saturday AM hours. Im still not expecting any accumulations although places along and north of the spine of the apps could get a dusting to 1/2. This would be places like Suches to Blue Ridge to Blairsville and other isolated spots north of the chain (spine of the apps). For the rest of us I think it will be just token flakes flying through the air which is quite unusual for November 1st. I think the best flake spotting chances will be from around 4am until 11am on Saturday. Saturday...expect high winds with scattered snow flurries and very cold temps. Highs are likely to get stuck in the mid 40s and winds will gust to 35+mph at times. It just going to be a COLD day. Saturday night...this will be our biggest hard freeze threat of the weekend. Im expecting temps to drop into the mid 20s with perhaps a few isolated colder spots. If everything goes as planned we could remain below freezing for 9-10 hours which is a pretty decent freeze for this time of the year. Sunday...should much more comfortable compared to Saturday. The winds will not be nearly as strong and temps should reach the low 50s under sunny skies. Thanks for reading and get ready to be froze and blown away.
