Friday, August 15, 2014 Run Toward Jesus Key Bible Verse: Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. (2 Timothy 2:22) Dig Deeper: 2 Timothy 2:19-22 God doesn’t just give us prohibitions; he gives us solutions and help. After fleeing, he calls us next to “pursue [righteous living, faithfulness,] love, and peace.” The more we pursue these attributes the more they will occupy our thinking. And the way we pursue these characteristics is by pursuing Jesus. But following Jesus isn’t something we can do casually. The word pursue means to move rapidly and decisively toward an objective. We aren’t just running away from temptation; we are running toward the Lord. As we are running after Jesus, we should at some point find others who are doing the same. Together we call upon the Lord out of our authentic need for him. Although the word for fellowship isn’t in the [original] text, the principle is certainly present. The New Living Translation [in today’s Key Bible Verse] expresses the thought well and brings great clarity to the practical nature of the verse. In fellowshipping with other like-minded believers in Jesus, a commonality of struggle and desperation for Jesus causes solidarity and community. We are better together; trust me when I say that you are not alone in your struggle. — Eric Mason in Manhood Restored My Response: What are the benefits of accountability and fellowship with a few men who struggle with temptation and yet desire to pursue Christ? Thought to Apply: Temptations that find us leaning on God are to our faith like winds that more firmly root the tree. – author unknown
