Friday Flash: Worthwhile A couple weeks ago, the folks of Creekwood were given $30 as a reverse offering and charged to bless someone with those $30. $30 is a funny amount of money. It feels like a small and large sum, simultaneously ... which is weird and makes deciding exactly how to bless others a difficult task. As I considered what to do with these precious and powerful thirty dollars, I was reminded of one of my favorite movies, Empire Records. In this 1990s cult classic, Lucas (a record store employee) is charged with making the nightly deposit at the close of business. Lucas, however, does something unexpected: he knows the record store is in financial trouble, so he decides to motor it to Atlantic City where he hopes to win big and save the store. Inspired by Lucas, I headed up to Oklahoma last weekend and-- Yall. Im kidding. Gambling didnt end well for Lucas, and it probably wouldnt have for me either. In fact, I can imagine that if I had gambled with my reverse offering, I would have to have a conversation with Jeff that looks a lot like the talk that Lucas has with his boss. Blessing others is not about carelessly gambling with what God has entrusted to us as agents of change and kingdom partners. Blessing others is about passionately risking and offering a part of ourselves as agents of change and kingdom partners who want to invest in building up the kingdom of God on Earth. Instead of worrying that my $30 is not enough or too much, I have committed myself to recognizing that this $30 is the perfect amount to assert my trust that God is alive in the work and passions of many. There is a huge difference. What are you doing with your $30?! Wed love to hear your stories this week. To share your $30 story, you can contact Janet Heaton, Jeff Howell, or me via email. Whitney P.S. In case that Empire Records reference delighted you or at least piqued your interest about how deeply entwined my pop culture, musical, and theological interests are ... our Rock & Roll Faith series continues this week! Come hear what Jesus has in common with Bob Dylan and bar rockers and why Peter would make an excellent frontman for a pop-punk band. Its all Gospel
