Friday, Her day.... The myth of Aphrodite and Adonis speaks of the loss of the Goddess lover to death and the Underworld. To reclaim him as Her own, She must descend as well and follow the lead of the Dark Queen Persephone, sacrificing parts of Herself for the chance to bring Adonis back to Her heart. She must become what he needs, instead of expecting him to be all She desires. The Goddess gives all for Her love, growing, integrating, healing; the love that is built after this journey is newer and better. In the tale of Hades and Persephone, He longs for Her and calls to Her, and She risks all to be with Him. Death to parts of Herself bring Life to Her hidden strengths, enthroning Her as His Queen and unlocking Her full power. Again, the Goddess lover is alone in the Underworld, and She must redeem Him by letting go of all that does not serve Her, of all standing in their way. These two myths interlock and mirror each other. Only the Dark Queen can guide the Golden One through Her trials because only She knows the full pain of that loss, and the heart-rending joy of reunion. Only She can bolster Aphrodite when fear threatens to obscure the path, reassuring Her that what waits beyond the trials is worth fighting for beyond all doubt. Love and Death, sacrifice and acceptance, fear and trust, letting go and holding on. The integration of Persephone perfectly complements the cycles of Aphrodite.
