Friday, I attended pediatric grand rounds at a hospital in Kansas City. The topic: Banked Human Milk for the babies in the NICU. Clear evidence that, when mothers own milk is not available for babies, banked milk is the next best option. So interesting to hear the discomfort, the denial, the resistance among some of the neonatologists in attendance. I do not know these people, so I cannot know what is really behind their resistance, but I suspect a discomfort with the female human body is in there somewhere. We somehow think that formula that comes from a factory is cleaner, nicer, makes us less uncomfortable than breast milk. Formula is generally based on cows milk. Have any of you ever milked a cow? I mean, I have been dirty and I wont say that my breasts were always really clean when I nursed my baby, but there has never been a time when there was visible mud and/or manure on them.
