Friday, July 17, 1863 --- Part of the regiment is moving a mile out of town and the remainder will go to-morrow. I have been on duty at the court-house.* I went up on the cupola where the bell was, and obtained an extensive view of the city and surrounding country, the river and the boats. The wharf is now crowded with boats, and the streets near it with goods and wagons. The grass which had grown over the streets during the siege, now begins to rapidly disappear. The rail-road is in operation for some distance out from town. Not many buildings in the city but what shows the marks of the siege. Many places in the streets are torn up by the large mortar-shells. It is a dilapidated, dirty place. There are three or four holes through the court-house, one shell had entered the roof, went through the upper floor, then fell into the hall below and tore up the stone floor there. 1st Lt. Edmund Newsome Co. B 81st IL Inf. * While on duty at the court-house, a Rebel army surgeon came to me and entered into conversation with me. He expressed a desire to see Gen. Logan, of whom he had often heard as being commander of the post, and severe on insulting Rebels. I pointed him to an open window and asked: “Do you see that officer there? That is Gen. Logan.” He looked at him a moment and remarked, “Don’t he look savage!”
