Friday July 4, 2014 MYT 8:59:28 PM Crispy, fluffy and doused with fish curry BY KATHLEEN MICHAEL IF you think you know your street food and want to recommend a place to the public, now is the best time to highlight your favourite makan place for The Star People’s Food Awards. The Awards began in June and will feature a local street food each month for 12 months. The public can submit their pictures and write-ups online, and vote for the ones they feel are most worthy of the title. July marks the start of recommendations for the second street food category — roti canai. How do you like your roti canai? Do you prefer it to be crispy and doused with curry, or would you prefer your curry separate or mixed with dhal? Sharing with us his favourite spot to have roti canai was Red FM announcer JJ, who recommended Kanna Curry House in Section 17, Petaling Jaya. At 10.30am on a weekday, Kanna Curry House was filled with people having their breakfast. Some were there already having their banana leaf lunch. Roti canai at the restaurant is made as it is ordered. This way, all customers will get hot, off-the-griddle roti canai. While visiting the restaurant, JJ had a chance to flip a few roti canai. “It is really not as easy as it looks,” he said while trying to flip the second dough. JJ prefers roti canai that is fluffy and crispy and that is exactly what he got at Kanna Curry House. “When I have my roti canai, I pair it with fish curry,” he said. He loves the idea of being able to pour as much curry as he wants. “This restaurant allows you to pick the curry you want from their stainless steel containers.” This enables him to banjir (drown) the roti canai with as much fish curry as he wants. “They don’t skimp on contents in their curry too. “You can find chicken meat in the curry and even tomatoes in the fish curry,” he said. A good plate of roti canai for him, has to be complemented with a hot glass of teh tarik. JJ visits the restaurant as much as he can, especially after work because his office is not too far away. “The people are friendly here and the restaurant is clean,” he said. He loves to have his meal outdoors. where the restaurant lays out tables and chairs beneath trees across the restaurant but the section only opens from lunch hour onwards. Kanna Curry House manager Muthu Kumar Kannan said roti canai was served from 7am to 10pm, every day. Muthu said curry in the restaurant was cooked twice a day. “In the morning we have fish, chicken curry and dhal, while in the afternoon we add crab and salted fish curry,” he said. A piece of roti canai is priced at RM1.30. “If you are a first-timer here, I would suggest you try out mutton varuval with the roti canai” he recommended. Kanna Curry House is located at No 29, Jalan 17/45, Petaling Jaya. If you have your favourite spot to have an appetising plate of roti canai, send us your nomination at mob.my Nominations will be held from July 1 to 10 while voting will begin on July 15 to midnight of the last day of the month.
