Friday, June 28, 2013, St. Paul, MN, day 179. My walks in the evening are all within 10 blocks of my house. Each time, I try to find at least one new discovery about the environs. This view, at 54 West George Street, shows a catalpla tree in full bloom. The most spectacular blooming year in my 20 years on the West Side. Catalpa bignonioides, a tree native to the Gulf coast (admission, I said earlier that it was native to the Cumberland Plateau, but not so! ) It was used for fence posts initially, then for decoration of new homesteads. The remnant of wrought iron fence nearby likely relates to the same Victorian era of home building and property stewardship. These two discoveries satisfied the roving eye of this "urban noser."
