Friday, March 08, 1940 London: The admiralty announced Friday that the German steamship Uruguay was scuttled by its own crew in the North Atlantic after being intercepted by a British warship. The warship picked up the crew. Stockholm: Finnish and Russian sources said Friday that efforts were under way to “feel out” the prospects for ending the war in Finland as an alternative to intensification of fighting in northern Europe. London: RAF planes flew in the longest reconnaissance expedition since the war started. It was the first time British planes had flown over Poland. Allies: The allied purchasing committee announces that negotiations with United States aeroplane manufacturers for the purchase of possibly $1,000,000,000 worth of aircraft will begin next week. Macao: The Japanese forces have succeeded in occupying all important places in their advance inland from Tongka and Heungchau islands, Kwangtung Province, where they effected another surprise landing three days ago. London: Films taken from R.A.F. fighter aircraft in combat with the enemy are now being used for the instruction of British pilots in fighting tactics.
