Friday Meet Our Stars interviews one of the most promising players in the local scene. A player with a lot of talent, who is an inspiration to his team mates and shows his leadership on court with his plays. Having played with the national team several times, and won already junior and senior categories is already a remarkable achievement for a player of 17 years. He is still fresh from his win in the MBA Shield Div.2 leading our team to the win in the final and top scorer of the game with 19 points. We are sure this player is going to be a household name in the future in local basketball. Lets get to know him a bit more, What is your name? Simon How old are you? 17 What is your favourite food and drink? Lamb & Kinnie When did you start playing basketball? When I was 8 years old. This is my tenth season with Hibernians. Who are the players you are influenced by? Locally ex player Silvio Cassar has taught me a lot throughout these ten years and helped me develop my fundamentals and skills. Which clubs did you play before joining Hibernians Basketball club? I used to play in primary school with Eurobasket before I joined Hibernians. What have been your biggest achievements and one disappointment? Winning the U16 league two years ago is probably the most memorable highlight so far. The progress we made from our first competitive team in 2010 is impressive and is a result of hard work. Also playing in the second division has been an amazing and very fun experience so far. One disappointment would be one of my experiences abroad with the national team as I could have played better. Have you ever represented the National team? If yes, how was the experience? Yes, I have been abroad twice and I can say it improves you as a player as you get to play at a higher level when compared to local competitions. I am also looking forward to playing with the U18 team next summer. What advice you give to young players in our nursery when it comes to academic studies and basketball? Through sport one can learn the true value of time management. A good, balanced timetable with time to rest is the key to doing your best in both. Sometimes being a student athlete can be stressful but it is definitely rewarding. Personally I wish to continue studying and hopefully get into the medical course and still train and play basketball!! What are your future ambitions? For the short term future, winning the second division league this season. For the long term future, playing in the first division with Hibernians still wearing the no.8 I have been wearing since my first training session.
