Stromae alias Paul van Haver was born on 12th of March in Brussels to a Rwandan father and a Belgian mother. While working at the Belgian radio station NRJ in 2009, music manager Vincent Verbelen saw potential in his new single “Alors on Danse” and decided to air it for the first time. The song got great feedback and soon sales rose to number one in Belgium. In May 2010 the single was a number one hit throughout Europe, namely in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Greece, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Romania and the Czech Republic. His style is influenced by different genres such as Eurodance, Cuban Son (a mixture of Spanish canción and African rythms), and Congolese Rumba. Another strong influence was Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. Stromae was nominated for Best Belgian Act at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards. In the same year he won the European Border Breakers Award and his debut album “Cheese” won the award for Best Dance Album at the Victoires de la Musique. His new album √ or “racine careé" will be released on August 19.
