Friday November 1 - we are docking in Honningsvag. Several people are going to the North Cape, but we decided to do the Sami dinner excursion later on - so we will take a walk into town (about ten yards from the ship), where I can hopefully buy another chip card for my camera. Did see some northern lights - something made me wake about 4 am, and look out the window, and there they were. We were sailing past incredible snow-covered mountains, and the green lights were dancing, stars were absolutely clear, two shooting stars - and several snowy white sea birds of some kind flying past the ship. But I was too lazy to get into the warm woolies and go out on deck. Tonight I think we must.... So we have been sitting up on Deck 8 in the lounge looking at scenery in the beautiful sunshine....sensory overload is approaching - it is just so immense. This is not a cruise as most people think of it. Its advertised as a Norwegian Coastal Voyage - and that is precisely what it is. Today in one of the ports we watched huge amounts of cargo being offloaded into that tiny community; commuters on and off the ship. Nor do these ships stop in the regular cruise ports - other than perhaps Bergen, Trondheim and Tromso. They are working ships serving isolated communities - yes there are roads, but Norway is so vast that it is cheaper to use the ship to get from one place to another - and then just take your car along. I think I mentioned we had a group of high school students on board - clearly a school excursion. Nor does one have to do the round trip - although Kathi and I are. Some of our friends get off tomorrow in Kirkenes and other people will get on for the southbound voyage. More later.....
