Friday November 28th Isles FM raffle in Tescos Isles FM will be meeting customers at Tescos today and tomorrow, with a tempting hamper of luxury items to boost the total as we count down to our appeal deadline. The community radio station needs to raise £6,000 by 10am today, and is closing on the urgent total. Managing Director David Morrison said it was important to recognise that fundraising needs to continue throughout next year for Isles FM. He said: “Once we have secured our 12-year licence, we need to move on and improve our broadcasting network so that more people can hear us more clearly. 2015 marks our 21st birthday – shared with important island events like Hebridean Celtic Festival. We want to be able to celebrate with listeners who will enjoy a service even better than we have delivered for the past 20 years.” Honour for island Responders Carloway First Responders have been named Team of the Year at the Scottish Ambulance Service awards this week The First Responder team were given the honour together with the ambulance crew at Barvas and ambulance service team leader Roddy Macdonald of Stornoway ambulance station. Roddy and three members of the Carloway team, including coordinator Calum Macarthur, attended the awards ceremony in Inverness and said they were delighted and honoured to win the award. The Carloway First Responder team train regularly with the help of Roddy and the Barvas Crew as well as people in the community who support them by acting as casualties They provide cover for all households in the Carloway area every evening and night and at weekends and public holidays. The Scottish ambulance service said ‘Carloway First Responders,won the Team of the Year award in recognition of their dedication and commitment in serving the local community. As First Responders, the team provides an invaluable community service, responding quickly to 999 calls to provide early care while the ambulance is on its way.’ Also awarded at the ceremony were Malcolm Macleod, Area Service Manager for Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland who received an award in recognition of 30 years service. Donald John MacLean, Ambulance Technician, Barvas was also recognised for 10 years service. Island business ideas win Three bright sparks from the Western Isles had their business ideas recognised in the final of the Create Highland competition this month. All three of the Western Isles finalists won prizes and between them took home more than half the total prize fund. Iain Macrury from Benbecula took both the top prize and a prize for the idea with the greatest cultural impact with his plan for a local food and produce hub. Vanessa Jade Cantos from South Uist won Best Social Enterprise idea and £1000 for her plan to setup ‘Island Haven Travel’ and David Macdonald from Lewis was awarded the most Innovative idea, winning £1000 with his plan to locally print the national newspapers locally, to make them available first thing in the morning. Harris leaves the league Harris Football Club has made the decision to withdraw from the Lewis and Harris senior football league, after an arduous season in 2014, when they lost all 16 of their games and didn’t win a single point. The Harris club fielded a side for each match, scoring 18 goals in their 16 games, but they also conceded 86 goals to opposing teams. An EGM on Wednesday night reached the decision not to compete next year. A league spokesman said he hoped to see them return in 2016.
