Friday, October 31 I met Jesus on Main Street, Valley Center. Three years ago I found myself facing All Hallows’ Eve just a few short weeks after Juli’s death. I decided I would help pass out candy at our Main Street Threads Thrift Shop. Juli enjoyed Halloween and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and working in thrift shops! It seemed a fitting tribute to her young spirit. This is my third year to join friends from First UMC, Valley Center for this Fall Holyday. I was baptized 64 years ago on All Saints’ Eve in Carntyne, Scotland in the chancel area where my parents were married. I remember the evening vividly. Following my baptism we returned to my Grandma’s home for a Halloween Party. The refreshments included a baptism cake. I dressed as an Indian -- I’m sure I was a Cherokee and a neighbor boy was dressed as a cowboy -- complete with gun. I still have a picture of him pointing the gun directly at me. As I reflect on that time I am much aware of the theological statement that was being made. Good versus evil. The holiness of God verses the depravity of humanity (Enemies fighting over land and life). Things haven’t changed much in six decades. Friday night I saw vampires and zombies, everyday heroes called Firefighters and Police Officers, Super Heroes called Spiderman and Bat Woman. There were ghouls and goblins. The “Progressive” Flo (you know you’re famous when you become a Halloween character!) and Freddy Kruger joined the throngs. Villains and heroes. Good and evil. Saints and sinners. And every now and then -- an “angel” would float by. We, sitting on that Main Street, were surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Jesus was very present. God is still in control. Thanks be to God. For all the saints -- Alleluia!
