Friday Update on Inspirational Kate: Katy is being seen by the Radiology team today in an effort to fix/save her PICC line. [Remember Katys port became infected last week and that small medical appliance had connected directly to a vein to give Katy antibiotics, infusions, and allowed for blood draws, etc., we were so sad when it had to go.) They inserted a PICC - In case anyone is curious in the difference between a PICC and an IV - its simple - a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheteris) is inserted & threaded in a peripheral vein in the arm, and then advanced proximally toward the heart through increasingly larger veins, until the tip rests in close proximity of the heart and can stay for long period of times. An IV (intravenous) is inserted into a vein, and is there for a shorter period of time. Katys veins are just becoming weaker, and her veins blow or quit working pretty rapidly, so we really need to send some #OOMPH to those veins and tell them to STAY UP AND RUNNING so Kate can get the medicine she needs, to get healthy enough to go home and wait for her new lungs there. The good news is her CO2 has come down some (58 mEq/L) - and though we are happy about this, its still not within normal range, which is between 23-29 mEq/L. This means she will remain on biPAP at night until her new lungs make their grand entrance. As always, please continue to pray for peace and love to her future donor family, and that they spend their days enjoying every possible moment with their loved ones until it is time for them to become our Kates miracle...selfishly we hope this miracle happens today, right now, in this moment, as we wait anxiously, Kate continues to get sicker; however, we understand it just may not be her donors time yet. Thank you all for your continued support. Please share Katys story, and encourage your co-workers, neighbors, friends and family to get on board and send #OOMPHFORKATY. She made a comment yesterday that she had lost her light for a while and feels like with the help of everyone [in this #oomphforkaty movement] its back. She is so appreciative of each and every single one of you, so from her - to you, THANK YOU. As always, please become an organ donor, to learn more visit: donatelife.net.
