Friday, after the Sunset Shelter repair, I put in place the scab-on piece at the South Shelter. I screwed in a couple of 2x4s on the bottom side of the beam for a cradle to hold the scab-on piece. Saturday, October 25, Kevin Earls joined me to work on the South Shelter. While I was nailing the scab-on piece to the lower beam Kevin cut a 12 foot section of log and then somehow got it to the trail by himself. Kevin tightened the winch to pull the log along the trail, oops! over the cliff it went. We spent the next hour winching the the log back on to the trail. Once we got the log to the shelter, we debarked the log, cleaned it up with a draw knife. OK; now how do we get this 1300 lb timber in place? You can see the A frame Kevin built in the images below. We secured it to the gable timbers and with one other brace. We used a 6200# capacity come-along from Harbor Freight, it did not make it through the day without problems. After nine hours of work we had the timber setting in place with just a few tweaks on Sunday morning before Kevin drove the big nails home. THIS IS A LOT MORE WORK THAN I EVER THOUGHT for 2 guys!!!! To get this job done we need 6 men to help get 5 or 6 timbers to the shelter and debark the log. If any ladies want to help, debarking is where you could help out. This is about 3 to 4 hours of work for 6 volunteers. Paula is holding the lodge for Friday (12th) and Saturday eve. (13th) for those who help with this project on Dec 13th. We will need a commitment from you by Friday Nov. 28th to hold the lodge for the Dec. weekend. A different set of volunteers will lift the timbers some other time. I heard rumors of someone on the mountain making chili and cornbread for the volunteer day. You can see more images from Kevin at s283.photobucket/user/TxEarls/library/Crag/Shelter
