Friday afternoon, a couple of minutes before six oclock. I was driving home from Tel Aviv. I had the radio on as I usually do, just in case there is a siren. I get to Raanana Junction, the light turns from red to yellow, to green. I start driving across the junction. The radio speaker interrupted Johnny Cashs cover to Hurt and declared Siren in Petach Tikva, siren in Hod HaSharon, siren in Kfar Saba... shit! That is where I am! I reduced my speed, saw a gas station, drove there. I can hear the sirens all around yelling at me to take cover. I find a parking spot, Park the car. 30 seconds passed since the siren started which means I have 60 seconds to find shelter. From the car next to me, a dad and his 6 months baby exit their car. I think for a second if I should offer them help, if I will have time to help them, or not, and just find shelter for myself. 60 seconds pass. I run to the back wall behind the gas station store. I lie on my belly and cover my head with my arms and hands. I see another family in front of me, with two children aged 2 and 5 running to take cover elsewhere. I cant stop worrying about the dad and his baby. I cant stop worrying about the family in front of me. I start counting out loud to calm myself down. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... Boom! I hear the iron dome intercepting the Hamas rocket. I thank g-d the iron dome worked this time. I start counting again. After 10 seconds I hear more explosions. I see the ants on the floor crawling all around me. I wish and pray that the shrapnel doesnt land on me. I wait 4 more minutes. My phone doesnt stop ringing. It is Eliran Ilay Maor worried sick about my situation. After 2 missed calls, I decide to remove one of my hands from my head and take the phone from my pocket. Im ok I answer. He is happy to hear my voice. I explained to him that I was taking cover so I couldnt answer my phone. I finally get up. Brush the ants off my clothes. Walk towards the car. I can see that the dad and baby are fine. I shutter at the image of a rocket landing in the gas station. Hurting and killing everyone there. I enter my car and continue my drive home. Shabbat Shalom! My we all have a peaceful weekend!
