Friday morning, I was in the tomato section of the garden, when the eggman arrived with his weekly delivery of organic goodness. While in the course of exchanging pleasantries and the news of the day he automatically joined me in the task of picking the dreaded Colorado potato beetles off the plants. And yesterday, Shaun & Jackie stopped by and before I knew it we were walking up and down the rows of potatoes picking off the potato bugs. Not all gardeners in this area do this. No, they spray the seed potato with a poison. The poison goes through the plant and kills the potato bug when they eat it. Unfortunately it also goes into the blossoms and kills the bees. We are already faced with a major shortage of bees in Nova Scotia. The colour in my garden may be there for the aesthetic pleasure it provides, but the main purpose of the flowers is to attract the bees that are essential for pollination. We maintain several hummingbird feeders which the missus fills 3 and 4 times a day. These miraculous little creatures also help to make our garden a success. At The Farm - Terre Noire we absolutely never ever or have ever used pesticides (or herbicide and/or fungicides) of any kind. Have a good one.
