Friday night did an almost exact repeat of itself from two weeks - TopicsExpress

Friday night did an almost exact repeat of itself from two weeks ago and It was wonderful to say the least. Just like then Eddie had a seat reserved on the bus going to the Mohegan Sun Casino while I had finalized plans to be a part of the Midnite Jam experience over at L.T. Evans restaurant and bar. Karaoke is king in this area and last night would do nothing to disprove that statement. Eddie drove over to the bus pick-up point by herself while I had made arrangements for my brother-in-law , Harry Shuman to drive me over to our vehicle from where I would drive to L.T.’s and then by extension to pick up the “ QUEEN OF THE SLOTS”when the show was over. It worked to perfection the last time and Eddie even won slightly over $ 100.00 for her troubles. I was dropped off at around 7:35 or so and went to have both a good time singing with some old friends as well as several newer ones that I had met there before , as well as a really good meal. I found that Debi and Scott had reserved a table for ten persons and I settled right in at the familiar end spot that I so love. Soon after I had ordered my familiar crab cake dinner several of the other regulars arrived and the night was already shaping up to be a good time. But when you have THE PREMIER MASTER OF FUN and MAYHEM at the controls , it is a foregone conclusion that a good time will be had by all. Or , at least by Howie. Lol. I wonder if he ever surprises himself with some of the antics that he goes through during a show. He does all of this while also running a very complex computer system that he is always adding little surprises to for some of his hangers on. As he almost always does , Howie started the show and allowed me to follow him. I chose an old classic by THE KING as I sang SUSPICOUS MINDS. Many , if not ALL of the ensuing songs were by the same persons singing their standards. But then a new to me at least , a young statuesque woman stepped into a really good cover of one of Bonnie Tylers smash hits. A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART. Andrea did a great job on a difficult song all the while smiling a toothpaste quality smile. Sadly ,It would be her debut as well as her swan song as she left after only that one song. Oh well , It was a great job and , as they say , always leave them wanting more. Rick Campbell does a really good cover of a real classic by THE WHO , WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN. Last night a man whom I had never seen before got up and did a really demonstrative version as he cavorted all over the stage area with Howie accompanying him on his air guitar. Rest easy my old friend, yours is much better and you actually know how the entire song goes . Howie and his bride to be were pawing ad kissing each other in between cigarettes and songs and I could not help but notice that when they do get married, he had better invest in a nice pair of KISS quality platform shoes. She is a bit taller than he is in bare feet and with her heels , it will be a dramatic difference. I am not one to suggest that he is inadequate in any way, for their relationship and all, but as they also SIZE REALLY DOES MATTER. Only fooling with you my boy. Forgive me ? Grand Funk Railroad had a smash hit from days gone by and I covered it nicely last night. SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL is a fun song to sing and usually is a crowd pleaser as well. For my third song of the evening I sang an often covered song called YOU CAN HAVE HER. My version was recorded by a rather obscure blues singer of yesteryear , Roy Hamilton. It is a much faster tempo song and is a real blast to sing as well. Eddie’s us leaving the Casino at 12:30 as looming and my night was almost finished. My fourth and final song was a soulful love ballad by what I consider to be a very overlooked blues master from the fifties and sixties. Mr. Otis Redding was only 26 years old when a plane crash took his life. He had only one of his many hits reach the apex of the industry. { SITTING ON THE DOCK OF THE BAY } became his only top hit and he never lived to see it reach the top. His death came prior to that prize. I have always thought of how very tragic that was. That was not , however , the song that I closed my night of singing with. THESE ARMS OF MINE was both written by Otis as well as performed by him . It is my very favorite of his hits. When I am singing it, I always have my eyes tightly shut and try to convey the soulful anguish that the song tells the audience. I do not even care if they like it or not. I sing it for myself and I sing it well indeed. My very favorite holiday is in two weeks and I am not sure yet where I will be going. L.T. Evan’s is having Howie and Midnite Jam there for a SPOOKIEOKIE evening. The mayhem begins at 9:00 and costumes are requested , but not required. There will be at least two prizes for best costume and Howie promised an additional one from Midnite Jam. See you there my friends.
