Friday night football ALDERSHOT 1 FOREST GREEN ROVERS 1 About thirty years ago I saw Kevin Keegan destroy Bulgarias defence at Wembley - and I thought it was the most influential performance Id ever seen by a player in a match Id watched live. Watching Lee Hughes terrorising The Shots on Friday was an equally impressive display. This fixture last season was the first Shots game I went to - and it ended 2-2 when Hughes bagged a late equaliser from an acute angle. Forest Green are favourites to win this division and one of the wealthier clubs we play against. The first half was pretty cagey for half an hour - you could see that FGR are a good side and Hughes was dangerous every time he got the ball. Shots held them though - and deservedly went ahead with a Brett Williams penalty after 37 minutes. Confidence coursed through the side once we were in front - and for the next 8 minutes we dominated the game with some of the best football weve played so far. I felt like shouting out its just like watching Brazil - except that Brazil are crap these days. Half time came a tad too soon - as we could have had another goal as we piled on the pressure. After half time, though, FGR got right back into it - and our keeper made a string of impressive saves. It couldnt last though as FGR turned the screw. A free kick was whipped in from the left hand side of our area - and Hughes rose above everyone to plant a bullet header in the back of our net. No disgrace in dropping points in this one - you could see that these were two good sides and evenly matched. Hughes has played at a higher level and is a really classy player - though he looks like he was born in the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. FGR sit second in the table behind Halifax and The Shots lie 9th with a 2-1-1 record. I think well make the playoffs - which would be a heck of an achievement for a squad that finsihed 4th bottom last season.
