Friday thoughts- “The African American community is looking at this verdict through a different set of life experiences.” – President Obama- Indeed we are. For instance personally- 1. It all (work) comes “so natural” to you. As if I came out of the womb producing records, musically proficient, and years of learning my craft had nothing to do with it. While “others” “work hard” and “hit the books in the corporate world. ” I never worked hard though. 2. You can’t date my daughter. Yes, more than once this has happened growing up in the then lillywhite West San Fernando Valley in the 1960-70’s. 3. Ironically I encountered the most racism in the very bastion of liberalism – Los Angeles. 4. Having a gun pointed at your head by the LAPD. Yes, for doing absolutely nothing except begin Black while reading Rolling Stone Magazine in a local record store. Shoot first ask questions later. 5. Being called the N- word numerous times by those who only knew the word by hearing it from their parents. They didn’t learn it from rap records in 1967. Damn right, we as African Americans have a different set of experiences, i.e., judgmental attitudes, work place issues, and being judged not for who we are, but what we look like. The President is spot on and it’s about time this country gets its collective heads out of their asses and comes to terms with our original sin. We cannot continue to just bury our heads in the collective sand as this will only continue to create these tragedies as fear and ignorance is the enemy of man. Is this really 2013? #reachhighergroundtogether
