Fridays NATIONAL WEATHER FORECAST SUMMARY By: Forecaster, Dave Saurer: Good Friday morning as we are winding up the first official week of 2015 on a bitterly cold start. Snowfall is still causing a concern across the down winds regions of the Great Lakes. Frozen precipitation is possible for portions of Texas going into the weekend. The biggest weather story all week long has been the very bitter Arctic cold air mass that continue beneath a strong, broad trough that sweeping through the Eastern half of the Nation for most of the week. Temperatures across the Plains to the Eastern Seaboard are ranging from 15 to 25 degrees below the average seasonable highs. Most of us will struggle this afternoon to barely climb out of the single digits in many spots across the Upper MS Valley, Ohio Valley, Interior New England and the Northeast through at least Saturday PM. Along with the Arctic frigid air, snow showers on the light side will be possible with a shortwave disturbance crossing the Northeast on this Friday. In the wake of the disturbance, a fresh surge of Arctic air will be digging on Southeastward from West-Central Canada and in the wake, the winds across the warmer waters of the Great Lakes is causing some significant snow showers to ramp up in the down wind regions of all five Lakes. Lake Effect Snow Warnings are in effect for the down winds of Lake Erie and Ontario where isolated regions could receive several feet of additional snowfall through the weekend. Elsewhere, we are watching an energy wave ejecting out of the Northern Mexico and combining with the moisture flowing out of the Western Gulf of Mexico, this will produce some widespread precipitation in the form of some rainfall for Texas into portions of the Lower MS Valley. Rainfall is expected to stay offshore, however, the warmer gulf air is expected to forecast to overtake the Arctic mass in place, this could lead to areas of sleet and freezing rainfall over the northern edge of this precipitation shield. Finally, on this Friday, we are seeing a few weak and unorganized waves of energy moving inland over the Western portions of the United States and this allowing for some light rain showers to threaten the forecast with higher elevation to locations from the Pacific Coast to the Rockies, some snow showers are possible higher up. Always be sure to follow NOAA Weather Radio for the latest forecast and statements for threatening weather conditions in your region from the National Weather Service. Have a great weekend! Bundle Up!
