Fridays always seems extra peaceful as its the day off here. No noise from the school on the corner and less people in the streets - they are all at the pyramids to get work from all the city people coming to ride on their day off! I started the day as usual with cleaning wounds and giving injections. Mohammed and I had been working steadily for over an hour when I suddenly thought WAIT A MINUTE - it was far, far too quiet. I realized that we had been working along without any donkeys nibbling me, drinking the Betadine or running away with a brush, and I asked where are the donkeys? Zaki had been giving IV fluids to a sick horse, Nadi was in the stable and Mohammed and Mahmoud had been carrying chaff to all the troughs and everyone had just assumed that the donkeys were behind the balcony where we store the hay, as they often go there. When we realized that Minidonk was eating hay alone, and Khamiis, Little Sister, Legwarmer and his girlfriend were missing, everyone stormed out while I stayed behind with the horses. I was terrified - I knew the pyramids were buzzing with people, and therefore also buses, carts, tuktuks and taxis. I imagined Khamiis being hit by a car and lying bleeding in the road, or Little Sister with broken legs. After 20 min Zaki came with Legwarmer and his armcandy, then Little Sister was brought by Mahmoud and at last Khamiis was shoved in the gate by Nadi. They had gone all the way down our street, through the parking lot for the touristbuses, past the sphinx, down the busy road past the shops and ended up nearly on the road I was making yesterdays video from. They were found running up and down the street. Many people leave their donkeys and foals loose so this was nothing unusual, and nobody recognized them as ours. I said thank GOD they werent hit by any cars! and Sherif said CARS? Thank God they werent stolen! They could be halfway across town by now! We had a visitor earlier who came in the back gate and has probably forgotten to put the chain on, not knowing that Legwarmer is notorious for trying to sneak out that door - I have been wanting an extra gate outside so maybe I will get my will now!
