Friend of PCI Steve Horn co-wrote a chapter appearing in the Transnational Institute, TNIs State of Power 2014 that is now hot off the presses. Coming out to coincide with the launch of the World Economic Forum in Davos, our chapter is titled State of the Planet: Fateful triangle of big energy, finance and complicit governments and is one of 11 chapters in this pretty incredible compilation. tni.org/sites/tni.org/files/download/state_of_power-v1.pdf Scientists have begun labeling our current geological epoch as the “Anthropocene,” because of the impact humans are having on the Earth’s atmosphere. They have traced the rapid and volatile changes underway in the molecular composition of our atmosphere to the industrial revolution, when emissions of greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide in particular — began to soar. However, we currently live in the “Corpocene,” due to the disproportionate role certain arthropods — directors of large corporations and Wall Street banks — play in the ecological transformations under way. Financial institutions, corporate powers and complicit governments have formed a “fateful triangle” — borrowing the phrase from the title of the famous book by Noam Chomsky — accelerating the effects of climate change and preventing mitigation and adaptation strategies that could plug the gap between our volatile present and future planetary stability.
