Friends- My English and Philosophy professors tell me that - TopicsExpress

Friends- My English and Philosophy professors tell me that writing everyday improves my skills, even if its just a note or letter, so here I am again. I intend to write as many days as possible during holiday break. Perhaps even some of you might actually enjoy reading it. ;) As in my previous note, I struggled significantly this past year. There came a short time in which I deactivated my Facebook account in an attempt to reduce my stress levels. I was extremely put off by the amount of unbridled anger and rhetoric. While I believe there is a time and place for outrage, it seemed out of control in some cases. I saw many If you dont agree with me you might has well just unfriend now, which seemed to be out of rage or anger. I was (and still am) afraid to express my true thoughts on various issues due this type of attitude, scared that I might lose relationships over something small such as a Facebook discussion. Ive found that my thought patterns have changed significantly over the past year and I try not to just assume facts or make claims without some thought first (Im not always successful, of course). It tends to be easy to be locked into an opinion, Ive found, and Ive struggled with that. Ive had to throw many of my closely held beliefs into question, mostly because I realized I was having these thoughts in bad faith i.e. I didnt really know why I held these thoughts or where they came from. Furthermore, I found various contradictions within my own opinions. But this is good! Through philosophical thought and examination, a person can really get to the heart of things and Ive been doing just that! Truly, what a gift! I couldnt be happier that I discovered philosophy and logic when I did. Its engaging and really encourages a person to sit down and examine the world around them while maintaining a steady mind. You begin to realize how little you actually know with certainty. Even something like the nature of reality comes into question, forcing you to see the world in a whole new light.
