Friends: Check out todays Tennessean. Im proposing that a new $17 million elementary school, to be located at the eastern end of my district on the Nashville School Board, be named in honor of John Seigenthaler. As I wrote in my nomination letter, Mr. Seigenthaler was a tireless advocate for human rights, reform in government, and equality for all. With his megaphone — the newspapers editorial page — he championed school desegregation and increased funding for our schools. He was a stalwart believer in the power of public education. And, of course, he was a friend and mentor to countless working journalists and former ink-stained wretches like me. He is missed, but his legacy lives on.
