Friends,I didnt know that Oprah, Madona, Alicia Keys, Brad Pitt, Britney Spears Michael Moore and Ben Affleck were all drop outs till yersterday when i read an article posted by one of the members of Ugandans At Heart(UAH), but then it goes on to show that a lot of people in the west are increasingly not taking academic qualifications to be a such big deal. People just want to live their life to the full; do what one has got to do; and have a little bit of fun before you die. Just think about it: would the music business be the same without Madonna? Would the film industry be the same without guys like: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts(all school dropouts)? What about Richard Branson ( the pro-gay business activist)? Which once again proves that a good line of bullshit will get you far in life than the so called qualifications. Obviously, this is different with folks back home in Uganda. One of the ministers in Tooro cabinet and someone i respect so much, Edgar Muvunyi Tabaro, recently suggested that the constitution should be amended such that a president has to have a master’s degree. He gave his obvious reasons but what stood out was summarily the fact hes disappointed in the current leadership in Uganda. Im still wondering whether more qualifications can fix that. Is Gen.Kayihura doing better than the IGP under Idi Amin, whats his name? One time former VP, Gilbert Bukenya, was shown on TV displaying all his certificates because he wanted to prove to his opponents that he was/ is educated,.........well, did he? For the record, none of the British PMs for the last 20 years had a master’s degree but they seem to be doing well. Theres also no real evidence or consensus that highly qualified people are better at leadership than those with simple or no qualifications at all. So, why are we obsessed with qualifications in Uganda? This does not mean that I no longer respect my qualifications( Yes, I have got some), but as one professor told us at university:’ we are only here to enhance your soft skills. Take them out there with the hard skills obtained because your soft skills are usually what everybody is looking for’.
