Friends, I have two potential job offers, both of which Im excited about for different reasons. The first is a full time position working as a para for a prestigious montessori program. The job only pays 12 an hour, but they offer discounted tuition, and would pay for me to become a certified montessori instructor. The downsides for this position are location, although they had a position open in their midtown school, they have filled it, so I would begin working at one of their west O locations, also because it is a private school, I would be working with children from very affluent families. The other position is with the urban league of development working as a site director for an elementary after school program for at risk youth. This position is also full time with a starting wage between 16 and 18 dollars an hour. The down sides of this program are that the program itself is failing. After many difficulties last year, the principal at the school threatened to shut down the program, this lead to the majority of the staff involved being let go,and they are in the process of reorganizing and attempting to save the program. I was able to observe about an hour worth of the program yesterday afternoon and could clearly see the struggle of the staff and children involved and was able to identify several issues that need to be addressed immediately. I was very concerned about the interview that followed the observation because I knew I wasnt going to be able to keep quiet about the struggles that I saw. The program director was very open and receptive to everything that I had to say however, and stressed that they desperately needed someone with an outside perspective that could come in to honestly evaluate the program, motivate the other teachers involved and provide critical outside the box solutions. I feel the first job is certainly the easier of the two, and am excited about the prospect of working in an established and certified Montessori program. The certification would also be very useful should I decide to move on later in life, or to provide upward advancement within the school. The discounted tuition is also an incentive, as getting O into a similar program is something Samantha and I have often talked about. That being said even with the discount, based on the hourly wage, I still do not know if we would be able to afford it. The second job offers a very reasonable rate of pay, and I feel very strongly about working with at risk youth, but it is definitely a mountain to climb, but the director did seem incredibly receptive to my ideas and ready to make a dramatic shift in strategy, but I dont know how receptive the rest of the staff would be to the transition. What should I do? Thoughts, suggestions are greatly appreciated.
