Friends, Today, I officially opened the Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu. I am delighted that the management of this hotel decided to invest in this modern hospitality facility in Mzuzu City. My Governments vision is to develop Mzuzu further into a world class City as it is a gateway to the Northern Malawi and to all the tourists’ attractions in the region, such as, the Nyika Plateau, Lakeshore areas, Likoma district and the historic Livingstonia, among many other areas. I am also happy to see a number of new modern facilities being built in Mzuzu. This is commendable because the Northern part of Malawi is opening up and more economic activities are taking place than ever before. I am convinced that this trend will continue for many years to come for the betterment of the people of Northern Region and Malawi as a whole. As a Government, we desire to see Malawians benefiting from such investments through economic and social empowerment since the Tourism sector has the potential to be a strategic tool to eradicate poverty; reduce inequalities; improve rural infrastructure; generate forex; create employment for the youth and wealth for the nation. It is for this reason that I would like to appeal to the Private sector to take lead in the development of tourism in Malawi. Good night and may God bless you all.
