Friends: Today, its the elephants who need our help. There are only a couple days left in the NY legislative session, and the bill to ban ivory sales needs our help to become law. New York is the second largest importer of ivory IN THE WORLD, so the bill is critical to the survival of elephants, 100 of whom are killed by poachers every single day. The Assembly has passed the bill, but the Senate hasnt -- it is stuck (and could die) in the Environmental Conservation Committee (ECC). Please CALL the chair of the ECC, Senator Grisanti at (518) 455-3240 and urge him to get the bill to ban ivory sales S. 7194 onto the floor for a vote and passed before the legislative session ends. We need to flood his office with polite phone calls! Additional talking points: - Over 80% of New Yorkers support this ban. - With the rate of poaching, elephants face extinction in the next couple of decades. - There is a global effort to stop the illegal ivory trade; New York is significantly hindering the protection of elephants by not passing this bill. - NY has a thriving black market of poached ivory which helps fund such terrorist groups as al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab, the Janjaweed of Sudan and the Lord’s Resistance Army, among others.
