Friends and Family Community Connection (FFCC) has delivered over 2.5 million nutritious meals to Haiti with the extraordinary help from the San Diego community. These meals have reversed the effects of malnutrition and kept many children alive. In 2015, FFCC will send two San Diego community members to Haiti for one year to secure a long-term sustainable food source for these children. This will be the first time that FFCC volunteers will be living in a foreign country to advance FFCC’s efforts in ending hunger. Bryce Rauterkus and Connor McClelland will be leading the agroecology team in Haiti. Agroecology is agriculture (agro-) designed to produce within local ecological interactions (-ecology). This practice strives to increase agricultural production while positively affecting the local environment, culture, and economy. The project will be growing food for the local orphanages while working with farmers to maximize their agricultural production. Bryce and Connor joined FFCCs April and November 2015 trips to Haiti in preparation for this project. During this past November trip, Bryce and Connor met with many local farmers, farmer associations, and government personnel. They were able to achieve access to two plots of land (from locals), partnerships with farmer associations, and cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture. The agroecology project will be initiated in the beginning of 2015 and we hope to see you involved in this first for FFCC! Help spread the word, donate farm/garden tools, make a financial donation, and visit the project’s section on FFCC’s website to read more about it. You can find it at ffccsd.org/agroecology
