Friends and Library Supporters, When my family and I moved here - TopicsExpress

Friends and Library Supporters, When my family and I moved here the summer of 2012, one of the first things we did was visit the library and get library cards for the five of us. Since my boys were toddlers they have participated in story times and summer reading programs at our local libraries. I attended workshops and classes offered free at our library in Missouri. Like most people, we took these services for granted. I now understand that our public resources cannot be taken for granted. In fact, if we take them for granted they will likely be taken away. Our libraries are open because of the belief that they are valuable. This belief drives the volunteers that keep us going and we cannot do it without you! Our modern libraries offer so much more than just books (although the books are awesome!). Every day people come in to use digital services they would not have access to otherwise. Cars are parked out front almost constantly with folks utilizing the WIFI. We have patrons looking for jobs, creating resumes, studying for GEDs, and finding new business opportunities. Friends old and new meet, exchanging warm greetings and new information. Young children are introduced to a world of learning and imagination they can take home for free. These experiences strengthen our community. I believe our library can and should be the center of the community. There are numerous services we can provide to enrich the hearts and minds of residents. We need you—your ideas, your time, your energy. Sign up for as much or as little as you like. This can vary and is flexible. Thank you to all of the volunteers who help make our library run smoothly. I truly appreciate you. Currently, we have the following volunteer opportunities: 1. Stories, Crafts, and Skill-sharing—read a story, lead a craft, and/or share your passions with children. Ongoing Tuesdays at 3:45 and Saturdays at 2:00. Sign up for one time or a regular basis. 2. Help create a “Holiday Wish List” of books we would like to add to our collection. 3. Holiday Activities—what would you like to see the library offer this holiday season? 4. Front Desk—check-in and out books, issue new library cards, and help patrons find materials. 5. Shelving, organizing books in the stacks, answering questions, helping patrons. 6. Event planning and Fundraising—we will need to raise money for our extended hours again this year. Call or stop in to see how you can help your community!
