Friends of BOPC, Delaware Park, and The Dog This morning I met - TopicsExpress

Friends of BOPC, Delaware Park, and The Dog This morning I met my friend Penelope Lanich at Delaware Park by Rumsey Woods and Hoyt Lake to walk my dogs with her blind and partially deaf gorgeous rescue boy Vishnu, whom they romp with at Pawprints By Penny & Co. LLC daycare a few times a week. While most of the hour was fantastic and pleasant, it started out a bit scary being rushed by a very large Golden Doodle off leash. I began screaming at the owners that they were breaking the law, not every dog gets along with others, you have no idea about vaccinations of strange animals and the concept of leash aggression. Then we had the elderly man with the mix Shiba Inu/Akita looking dog who he lets walk around with his leash on but not secured to his owner. I told him I was going to call the Police on him. I saw another car pull up and open the door and out ran 2 English Springer Spaniels while another pulled up and out bounded a large Keeshond. THIS IS NOT THE OFF LEASH DOG PARK - THAT IS THE BARKYARD OFF PORTER. I feel VERY strongly that people need to ABIDE by the law, which states a dog must be on a hand held leash in all city parks, with the exception of established off leash dog parks. This is for the safety of all - dogs and humans alike. For all my Animal Behavior Professionals on Facebook - ideas? My thought, since i sit on the Board of Directors of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is to convene a committee of animal experts and see how we make this a safer place - I am wondering if we could work with the Internship Program at Canisius Colleges ABEC Program to have Animal Behavior Students educate people with their dogs that come to Delaware Park. This Volunteer Corp could wear tshirts advocating Responsible Dog Ettiquette at the Park and inform them of the Barkyard and the Black Rock Dog Park. We had a great experience with the ABEC Internship Program when I owned Canine Splash and I wonder if an Internship/Volunteer Corp of Committed Dog Professionals, Educators, and Students could come together and make this a positive, informative, pleasant experience? Me holding onto 2 resource guarding dogs screaming at people is clearly NOT the answer. I was frightened, my dogs were fearful and I felt as if we were under attack. Kolby was bitten by an off leash pitbull 9 years ago in Delaware Park and I do NOT want a repeat. We need a peaceful, informative, educated approach here. Thoughts my friends?
