Friends; today I encourage you to celebrate life and the blessings of the Lord in your life. We grew up singing a song ‘count your blessings name them one by one, count your blessings see what God has done, count your blessings name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done’. This is not just a song but a prescription that should inform how we order our lives. When we look back at things in our lives we are prone to count blessings only as it relates to the big things that occur or we experience. Sadly, because we have been socialized to view blessings only in terms of large benefits we find ourselves feeling bewildered and frustrated. This is exacerbated by the fact that it is during these times we find ourselves looking over the fence of others to evaluate their ‘blessings’ in comparison to our own. The sad reality is that when we do so we will find ourselves not being grateful for the many things that God has provided and continues to provide that we experience on a daily basis. I am sure that while many of us may not be able to boast about having large bank accounts, or live in mansions with all the amenities that our blessings far outweigh the sum total of all the wealth in this world. Think about it, how much can one pay for peace of mind? How much value would we put on being fearless in all situations no matter how foreboding they may appear? Or better yet, what price would anyone be willing to pay for contentment with one’s lot in life without any trace of feeling envious of the worth accumulated by others? The reality is such values are priceless. In fact, I am sure that you would agree with me that some of the most fearful are those who have enormous wealth. They could buy anything that is on sale since price is not a factor but the greatest things in life are not things that could be purchased. Yet for many, in spite of their accumulated wealth, they are unhealthy and spend countless amounts of the finances to maintain levels of wellness that are elusive. Consider for a moment some of the following passages of scripture: Psalm 119:165 “Great peace belongs to those who love your instruction, and nothing makes them stumble”. 1 Timothy 6:3-8 “3Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. 4Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. 5These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy. 6Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. 7After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 8So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content”. Philippians 4:10-12 “10But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity. 11Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”. What more can we ask for, nothing!!! Thank God for the invaluable blessings that He continues to bestow upon us that no amount of money could replace or pay for. So from today, just continue to count your blessings and it would really surprise you what the Lord has done.
