From 1990 to 2010, deaths from chronic kidney disease (CKD) rose by about 82% worldwide—the third largest increase among the top 25 causes of death after HIV/AIDS (396%) and diabetes (93%). In England, about £1·45 billion was spent on caring for people with CKD in 2009—10, just 1·3% of National Health Service spending, and a substantial proportion of this cost was devoted to renal replacement therapy in the small proportion of patients with kidney failure.
