From: ABATE of PA News Date: 9/25/2014 6:31:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Update from the ABATE of PA Office - Readshaws Ride To Gettysburg, Saturday, Sep. 27 The A.B.A.T.E. of PA Office just received this Press Release from Rep. Readshaw regarding the Ride To Gettysburg. The weather forecast looks great for the weekend. Hope to see you on Saturday! (Press Realease Attached) Readshaws Ride to Gettysburg this Saturday HARRISBURG, Sept. 23 - State Rep. Harry Readshaw, D-Allegheny, announced today that his Readshaws Raiders and motorcycle riders from around Pennsylvania are preparing for their annual Ride to Gettysburg. The trek from Harrisburg to Gettysburg is set to begin near the fountain outside the East Wing of the Capitol at 1 p.m. Sept. 27. The annual event supports the Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monuments Project, which Readshaw established in 1997. State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, has been appointed ride marshal for this years trip. Every participant in the ride for the monuments becomes part of the legacy of Gettysburg, Readshaw said. I am honored that so many find the time in their schedule to make this trip year after year. In years to come, they can show their children they helped to keep the monuments in a condition that honors the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, ensuring that future generations will know the pride taken in these soldiers and their memories. In addition to ride marshal Kortz, state Reps. Mark Keller, Dan Moul and Jim Marshall, and former state Rep. Teresa Forcier and her Motormaids, are scheduled to participate in the journey. State Rep. Patty Kim, D-Dauphin, is expected to greet the riders before they leave Harrisburg, but will not join in the ride. Last years ride attracted approximately 400 participants. The Monuments Project was started to fund desperately needed cleaning and repairs for the more than 140 monuments and markers on the battlefield that honor the heroism and sacrifice of the thousands of Pennsylvanians who fought in the epic clash, which turned the Civil War tide in the Unions favor. Most of the Pennsylvania monuments and markers were erected by veterans of the battle, with the assistance of allocations approved by the state General Assembly. Readshaw has also encouraged other states to restore and preserve monuments they have placed on the Gettysburg battlefield honoring their respective soldiers.
