From AWEA... The top states for new wind power capacity installed in 2013 include California, Kansas, Michigan, Texas, and New York. In total, 13 states and Puerto Rico added new wind capacity during 2013, down from a record 31 states in 2012. The U.S. wind energy industry’s geographical reach remains impressive. Thirty-nine states and Puerto Rico are now home to the 905 utility-scale wind projects currently operating in the United States. The “Gigawatt Club” of states with more than 1,000 MW of installed wind project capacity continues to expand. Michigan became the 16th state to surpass 1,000 MW. Iowa and South Dakota exceeded 25% generation from wind energy while 9 states in total produced more than 10% of their generation from wind energy, with 6 states above 15%. Wind energy provided 4.1% of the nation’s electricity during 2013. The top 10 districts with installed wind power capacity include TX-19 (Rep. Randy Neugebauer), OR-2 (Rep. Greg Walden), CA-23 (Rep. Kevin McCarthy), IA-4 (Rep. Steve King), OK-3 (Rep. Frank Lucas), TX-11 (Rep. Michael Conaway), CO-4 (Rep. Cory Gardner), TX-13 (Rep. Mac Thornberry), KS-1 (Rep. Tim Huelskamp) and MN-1 (Rep. Tim Walz). Representative Tim Huelskamp moved into the top 10 ranking during 2013. At least 71% of the 113th Congressional Districts contained operational wind turbines, wind-related manufacturing facilities, or both. Therefore, 66% percent of all Democrats in Congress and 76% of all the Republicans in Congress have operational wind turbines, wind-related manufacturing facilities or both.
