From: Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation Sent: Monday, July 28, 2014 4:56:09 PM Subject: Vet at Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic Appointed to State Vet Board Governor Bentley has announced new appointments to the ASBVME (Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners). We are glad to see that Dr. Margaret Ferrell, the veterinarian at the low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Birmingham (Alabama Spay/Neuter Clinic), was appointed to the board. Hopefully, Ferrells appointment will have an impact on the boards attitude toward affordable spay/neuter options. The ASBVME has fought hard to close the low-cost clinics in Alabama despite strong opposition from AVRAL and other animal advocacy groups. Here are the appointments: Veterinarian Dr. Thomas C. (T. C.) Branch of Birmingham was reappointed to his position on the ASBVME for a second term. Dr. Branchs term will expire March 14, 2018. Guyanne Harris, LVT of Cleveland was appointed to the Licensed Veterinary Technician position on the board. She replaces Ms. Debbie Whitten. Ms. Harris term will expire March 14, 2018. Ms. Anne Payne of Ramer was appointed to the consumer position on the board. She replaces Ms. Nancy Pett. Ms. Paynes term will expire on March 14, 2018. Governor Bentley also announced the replacement for veterinarian Dr. Robert E. Pitman in advance of the expiration of Dr. Pitmans term on October 10, 2014. Veterinarian Margaret Hudson Ferrell of Birmingham was appointed to fill the veterinarian position currently held by Dr. Pitman, effective October 10, 2014. Dr. Ferrells term will expire in 2018. The ASBVME is the only government regulatory agency in Alabama for companion animal welfare. Alabamas animals are, in many ways, at the mercy of the board. We hope the newly appointed members will put animal welfare above profit and give pet owners, rescues, and shelters affordable veterinary care options. Hoping for the best, Dr. Rhonda Parker, State Chair, AVRAL I want to thank Bryant Harris for sharing this with us
