From Alison K. DeGraff: Dear friends and colleagues who hold the Grenadines in their hearts, I am excited to announce Juliana Coffeys and my production of an avian field guide covering the transboundary Grenadine islands! This will be one of the first guides in the Caribbean to be inclusive of scientific and local ecological knowledge (LEK) and folklore, representative of the rich avian biological and cultural heritage unique to the islands. The guide will be a valuable resource for training local bird monitors to participate in the Caribbean Waterbird Census (CWC) and will enhance the overall conservation and management of Grenadine resources, targeting both locals and foreigners with an interest in the avifauna of the region. As a volunteer-driven project, we now need financial support to enable us to finish documenting the LEK and folklore within the Grenadines—the final stage for the completion of this guide. Any funds we raise will cover costs associated with travel, room and board expenses during the two-week LEK collection from Grenadine citizens, spanning the nine-inhabited islands of the Grenadines, with any additional funds going towards printing and getting the guide back to the local communities. Highlights of the current guide include: A complete and comprehensive checklist of all birds recorded in the Grenadines Over 130 profiles of bird species accompanied with high-quality photographs taken in the region Detailed maps that depict each of the Grenadine islands, and showcase important bird areas and birding hot spots You will find our campaign at igg.me/at/grenadines-birds/x/5358981. Any amount that you can donate goes a long way, and if you cannot monetarily contribute but still want to help, we would love it if you would get the word out about our project. If you have been bird watching in the Grenadines or nearby islands and have stories, hot spots, or photos to share, please do. If you are/have connections to a local business and would like to instead donate a meal, transportation, or place to sleep while we are on your island, that would help us put more money towards getting this resource out into the community! For further information please visit our project website at grenadinesbirds.tumblr or just ask. THANK YOU! One love, Aly DeGraff
