Alley Cat Allies is offering free rabies vaccinations for cats in South Newton Township, Penn., if the township retracts a plan to catch and kill outdoor cats. In July, the township’s leaders announced they had hired a company specializing in “wildlife nuisance control” to catch and kill all outdoor cats, after one cat tested positive for rabies. The announcement has caused public outcry, and the company that the township said would do the trapping has declined the work because of moral and ethical issues. The catching and killing of outdoor cats has been practiced for decades, but does nothing to protect the public from the threat of rabies. ZERO documented cases of cat-to-human rabies transmission in past 40 years.
